This marks the second consecutive year that the Pacers have appeared in the conference finals, having eliminated the top-seeded Cavaliers in the second round. They are facing the Knicks, who advanced by defeating the reigning champion Boston Celtics in six games. Historically, neither team has recently reached the NBA Finals. The Pacers` last appearance was in 2000 (when they beat the Knicks in the East finals), while the Knicks` last Eastern Conference title came in 1999 (also against the Pacers in the East finals).
