Washington Capitals defenseman Alexander Alexeyev was reportedly pepper-sprayed and arrested on Saturday after an alleged fight. According to a report from ARLnow, he was charged with public intoxication following an incident outside a bar in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia.
Arlington County Police Department spokesperson Kiyah Daniell informed ARLnow that police were alerted by a witness who saw an altercation between two men around 3:26 a.m. near a pizza place on Clarendon Blvd.
Upon arriving, officers reportedly witnessed Alexeyev assaulting the other individual, which led police to use pepper spray on the Capitals player.
Daniell stated, “Officers subsequently observed the male suspect involved in a physical altercation with the male subject. As officers approached, the male suspect assaulted the male subject, and one officer deployed pepper spray as he was taken into custody.” She added that Alexeyev received medical treatment at the scene for the effects of the pepper spray.
Alexeyev was booked into the Arlington County jail shortly after 4:19 a.m. Saturday but has since been released.
The 25-year-old defenseman was a first-round draft pick (2018) for Washington. He made his NHL debut in 2021 and has appeared in 80 games for the team.
Last season, Alexeyev played in only eight regular-season games without scoring, but participated in all 10 of the Capitals` playoff contests. His contract is set to expire this summer, making him a restricted free agent.
