Chael Sonnen Apologizes for ‘Maniac’ Behavior in Hotel Altercation

MMA News

Chael Sonnen, the outspoken former MMA fighter and current analyst, has publicly addressed a controversial incident from his past.

The event occurred in December 2021 at a Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas, where Sonnen was briefly detained following an altercation in a hallway with a couple, Dr. Christopher and Julie Stellpflug. According to the Stellpflugs, Sonnen appeared intoxicated and aggressively knocked a drink from Christopher`s hand without provocation. A hotel employee also claimed to have been physically struck by the three-time UFC title contender.

The legal proceedings saw Sonnen eventually plead no-contest to a single misdemeanor charge of breaching the peace. Initially, he had faced more serious accusations, including battery by strangulation and ten misdemeanor battery charges. As a result of his plea agreement, he was ordered to pay a fine of $750.

Recently, Sonnen released a statement via Instagram, offering an apology to the Stellpflugs for his actions that night.

Addressing Dr. Chris and Julie Stellpflug, Sonnen said, “A number of years ago in Las Vegas were coming down a hallway trying to get to their room, encountered a maniac, me, and I apologize.” He admitted, “I’ve wanted to apologize for a number of years, but it just wasn’t right. It’s a whole situation, it just takes time, but I’ve got to tell you it has been bothering me.”

Sonnen also extended his apology to the couple`s children, acknowledging the negative impact that being associated with a media-covered legal case could have on them, even though they were not present during the incident. He empathized by saying, “Reverse the role and think of myself as a child with my own parents, your parents get drug through the media and a legal case because they encounter a madman while doing what they should be doing in a hallway… you’re owed an apology and I sincerely give you one.”

While touching upon the accusation of intoxication, Sonnen did not specifically detail his state during the encounter, only briefly mentioning being on a “trip” that potentially clouded his judgment. He also made it clear that his wife had no involvement in the incident whatsoever.

He reiterated, “I was by myself when I met them… my wife had nothing to do with the story, they’ve all never seen, never even put eyes on one another—this is very specifically from the madman in the hallway, me, to Mr. and Mrs. Stellpflug. I sincerely apologize. I would like to repeat, I also apologize to your family and your children specifically and I’m going to leave it at that.”

Sonnen, 48, remains a prominent figure in the MMA community, serving as an analyst for ESPN`s UFC coverage and sharing his insights on his popular YouTube channel. His notable fighting career included challenging for UFC titles in two different weight classes before his retirement in 2019 with a professional record of 31-17-1, concluding his active competition with Bellator.
