The outcome wasn`t what Charles Oliveira had hoped for.
At UFC 317, competing for the vacant lightweight title, Oliveira was defeated by Ilia Topuria via a stunning first-round knockout. Topuria landed a powerful right hook, followed by a left, which sent the Brazilian fighter heavily to the canvas.
This marked the first time Oliveira had been finished by knockout in almost eight years, the last being against Paul Felder in 2017. Shortly after the fight, Oliveira shared a concise statement on social media regarding the defeat.
Speaking on Instagram, Oliveira commented, “It wasn’t how we wanted it but I’m fine. I just want to thank everyone for the affection and the wonderful energy. God bless you all.”
Although the bout lasted less than three minutes, Oliveira started aggressively, immediately pressuring Topuria. He managed a brief takedown and attempted a submission, but Topuria defended well and avoided the threat.
Once the fight returned to striking, Topuria`s power proved decisive.
Topuria effectively used his jab and, as he adjusted to Oliveira`s timing and range, he appeared to be setting up his finishing blows.
The end came during another intense exchange. Topuria landed a brutal right hook that visibly rocked Oliveira, rendering him unconscious instantly. As Oliveira was falling, Topuria landed a follow-up left hand.
Oliveira was already out before hitting the mat, prompting referee Marc Goddard to quickly halt the contest at 2:27 of the first round.
Despite the setback, Oliveira remains a highly-ranked contender in the lightweight division and is expected to compete in significant fights once he has recovered.
