Daria Kasatkina Excited to Represent Australia

Sports News

Daria Kasatkina, originally from Russia, has expressed her excitement about starting a new phase in her tennis career. This comes after she successfully changed her national allegiance to Australia.

Speaking to reporters, the world No. 12 shared her emotions following the acceptance of her application for permanent residency. The 27-year-old is set to compete under the Australian flag for the first time at the Charleston Open this week.

Kasatkina, who publicly came out as gay in 2022, has been a vocal critic of the Russian government`s stance and policies regarding LGBTQ+ rights. She has also openly opposed the war in Ukraine.

She mentioned that Monday marked her first official day as an Australian player and used the Australian term `mates` while addressing reporters.

Kasatkina admitted that the change feels significant and emotional, requiring some adjustment. However, she conveyed her happiness about embarking on this new chapter and representing Australia on a prominent stage.

Having been born in Tolyatti, a city in western Russia, Kasatkina has not returned to her native country for over two years. This period coincides with her coming out and her outspoken stance against the conflict.

In Russia, the LGBTQ+ movement has been officially labeled as extremist, potentially leading to severe legal repercussions for individuals and groups associated with it.

Kasatkina, who currently resides in Dubai and trains in Spain, intends to make Melbourne her permanent residence.

She explained that her decision to switch nationality was largely influenced by the situation in her country of birth.

Kasatkina emphasized that being openly gay necessitated this move to remain true to herself.

As a top-seeded player, Kasatkina has a bye in the first round at Charleston. Her first match representing Australia will be in the second round against either Lauren Davis or Jamie Loeb.
