Edmonton Oilers Edge Florida Panthers in Thrilling Stanley Cup Final Game 1 Overtime Win

The Edmonton Oilers have seized a 1-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final, thanks to the dynamic pairing of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid. Their combined effort led to the decisive overtime goal, securing a 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers in Game 1.

Draisaitl wasted no time making an impact, scoring just 66 seconds into the game. This rebound goal marked the fastest opening goal in a Stanley Cup Final since 1976.

The Panthers, however, responded powerfully, netting three consecutive goals, two courtesy of playoff stalwart Sam Bennett, to take a 3-2 lead entering the third period.

While a 3-2 lead is typically robust for the Panthers, the Oilers proved an exception. Edmonton required a crucial play, and McDavid delivered, setting up behind the net (“Gretzky`s office”) and finding Mattias Ekholm. Ekholm received the pass and fired a shot past Sergei Bobrovsky, leveling the score at 3-3.

In the overtime period, chances arose for both sides. A costly error by Florida forward Tomas Nosek resulted in a delay of game penalty when he sent the puck over the glass. This handed the Oilers` potent power play an opportunity, which McDavid and Draisaitl capitalized on with a superb one-timer to seal the 4-3 victory and the early series advantage.

Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner had a shaky start but significantly recovered after the Panthers took their 3-1 lead. He finished the game having stopped 29 out of 32 shots, including vital saves during overtime.
