Emma Raducanu: Building Physical Resilience After Miami

Sports News

Tim Henman believes Emma Raducanu needs to focus on building physical resilience despite her impressive quarter-final appearance at the Miami Open.

Raducanu`s strong performance in Florida ended with a defeat to Jessica Pegula in a close three-set match.

Despite this loss, reaching the quarter-finals, including a victory over Emma Navarro, a top-10 player, marks Raducanu`s best tournament result since her 2021 US Open win.

Henman noted that the 22-year-old Briton demonstrated excellent tennis in Miami.

“It`s been positive to see her compete more consistently this year. Although the results weren`t always there initially, her hard work in physical training was evident in her improved movement on the court,” Henman commented to Sky Sports Tennis.

He highlighted her win against Emma Navarro as a turning point, boosting her confidence. Henman sees many positives for Raducanu moving forward from her Miami performance.

Marion Bartoli, a former Wimbledon champion, is impressed with Raducanu`s resilience, especially after dealing with off-court issues and a previous defeat at Indian Wells.

Bartoli noted Raducanu`s close match against Pegula, emphasizing that it wasn`t a straightforward defeat. She believes Raducanu`s ability to maintain a high level of tennis indicates both physical and mental readiness.

“Regrouping after challenges and overcoming disappointments shows her dedication and belief in her process. Her improved movement suggests she`s nearing her peak physical condition, similar to when she won the US Open,” Bartoli stated.

Bartoli added that gaining momentum before the clay season, which demands greater physical endurance, is crucial. She views Raducanu`s positive experience and strong performance in Miami as beneficial preparation.

Henman reiterated that building physical resilience is the most critical factor for Raducanu. He believes her career path has been somewhat unconventional, achieving major success without a solid physical base.

“The key now is consistent competition and building that physical foundation. If she maintains this, positive results should follow,” Henman concluded.

Following Miami, Raducanu will represent Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup and participate in the Open Capfinances Rouen Metropole clay-court event.
