British tennis player Emma Raducanu described recent times as emotionally challenging as she prepares for her third-round match against American player McCartney Kessler at the Miami Open on Sunday.
Raducanu has experienced a turbulent period this year, including ending a trial coaching partnership with Vladimir Platenik just before this tournament.
Prior to that, her collaboration with coach Nick Cavaday concluded due to his health issues. She also faced an upsetting incident in Dubai involving an overly persistent fan that left her distressed on the court.
Despite these difficulties, Raducanu, currently ranked No. 60 in the world, showed resilience in Miami. She achieved a decisive victory against Sayaka Ishii in her first match and then fought back to win against Emma Navarro, a top-10 player, marking her first win against such a high-ranked opponent in eight months.
In the upcoming third round in Miami on Sunday, Raducanu will compete against another unseeded player, McCartney Kessler, who is ranked No. 48.
Reflecting on her recent experiences after defeating Navarro, Raducanu acknowledged the difficulties of the past few months, both on and off the court.
She stated her current aim is to establish a more stable and secure environment. She expressed feeling supported and happy with her current team in Miami, which motivates her to compete strongly.
Raducanu emphasized the positive impact of this support, noting that it has been emotionally demanding but the wins provide her with renewed energy and motivation.
Kessler, a Rising Star, Next Opponent for Raducanu

Kessler has rapidly improved her ranking, climbing from 217 to 67 by the end of 2024. She won her first WTA title at the Tennis in the Land WTA 250 event in August.
The 25-year-old added a second title at the Hobart International in January and was a finalist at the ATX Open in March.
Kessler also achieved a significant victory by defeating world No. 3 Coco Gauff at the Dubai WTA 1000 event in February.
She reached the third round in Miami after wins against Marie Bouzkova and Linda Noskova.
Raducanu, in a conversation with Tennis Channel, described Kessler as a formidable opponent.
She mentioned watching Kessler`s match against Coco Gauff in Dubai and acknowledged Kessler`s strong recent form and winning streak.
Raducanu anticipates needing to perform at her highest level to succeed and have a chance in their upcoming match.
Delgado Highlights Petchey`s Familiarity with Raducanu

Prior to her match against Emma Navarro, Raducanu was observed practicing with Mark Petchey, who previously coached Andy Murray and was present in her player`s box during the match.
Jamie Delgado, currently coaching Grigor Dimitrov, commented on Raducanu`s coaching situation.
Raducanu is currently receiving guidance from mentor Jane O`Donoghue and LTA coach Colin Beecher in Miami, following the conclusion of her trial with Vladimir Platenik.

Delgado noted that while changing coaches mid-tournament is not ideal, the trial with Platenik didn`t work out. He pointed out that Mark Petchey is a familiar figure for Raducanu, having assisted her in the past, which could provide a positive initial boost and help her regain form.
Delgado emphasized the importance of having trusted individuals around her, which has previously contributed to Raducanu`s confident performances. He believes her victory in the first match has likely boosted her morale.
Regarding Raducanu`s search for a coach, Delgado suggested she would be looking for long-term consistency and familiarity. He acknowledged Petchey`s commitments with broadcasting but recognized their past successful collaboration and the potential for short-term benefit this week.
