Emma Raducanu Needs to Sort Coaching Situation, Says Martina Navratilova

Sports News

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has advised Emma Raducanu to address her coaching situation, noting that Raducanu`s current performance level is sufficient to break into the world`s top 30.

Raducanu`s impressive run at the Miami Open, where she reached the quarter-finals, was halted by fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula on Wednesday.

Pegula overcame a resilient effort from Raducanu to secure a hard-fought victory 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2.

Tim Henman, Martina Navratilova and host Gigi Salmon discuss Emma Raducanu`s Miami Open defeat

Navratilova commented, `It was amazing. Considering how she appeared at the end of the second set, you might have thought the match was over. Yet, she won the set, won the tie-break, and still competed in the third, despite clearly not feeling well.`

`I believe stress contributed to her condition, as the weather was pleasant, and they finished late in the evening, so temperature wasn`t a factor. While humidity can be draining, this seemed to be something more for Emma. It`s remarkable she completed the match.`

Navratilova added, `If she remains healthy and maintains this level of play, she could be seeded at Roland Garros. I anticipate her ranking improving into the top 30. Her health is the primary concern.`

Raducanu is Getting Back into Top 20, Says Henman

Despite needing a medical timeout, Raducanu competed strongly against Pegula

Former British No 1 Tim Henman stated, `I thought the match quality, the ball-striking from both players was outstanding. Pegula is world number four and a US Open finalist, hard courts are her preferred surface, and Raducanu matched her intensity throughout the match.`

`Seeing this level from Raducanu, including her tennis skills, movement, resilience, and fighting spirit, suggests she is on track to return to the top 20 or top 30, which is what we all hope to see.`

Raducanu: I`m Really Proud of Myself – Heat Made Me Feel Dizzy

Highlights of Emma Raducanu against Jessica Pegula from the quarter-final of the Miami Open

Raducanu told media post-match:

`I`m really proud of my fight and how I competed throughout the match. Jessica played exceptionally well from start to finish, demonstrating her class and high level, especially towards the end.`

`Despite the loss, I can take many positives from this week and look forward. It was challenging, and I played some excellent tennis to reach this stage, so it`s encouraging to regain that feeling of playing well.`

`That feeling has been missing, and rediscovering my fighting and competitive spirit this week was refreshing and enjoyable.`

`I felt very dizzy before the medical timeout, almost faint. The humidity was high, and there was a long wait, so it might have been a combination of factors.`

`The points were physically demanding with long rallies and tough conditions. I`m unsure how I recovered in the second set, but I definitely struggled more in the third.`

`I`m uncertain about my next steps. I need to pause, reassess my approach. This week was positive, but I need to strategize and create a plan moving forward.`

Pegula acknowledged Raducanu`s performance in her post-match interview, saying: `It was a tough match. I played a strong first set, had a slight lapse in the second, regained control, and led 2-0 in the tie-break, but momentum shifted.`

`She began moving the ball effectively, serving well… sometimes that happens, but my focus was to start the third set decisively and quickly to prevent it from becoming too close.`
