Ending Canada’s Stanley Cup Drought: Oilers Eye First Win Since 1993

NHL News

Canadian hockey enthusiasts have patiently waited for the Stanley Cup to return north of the border. That long wait might soon be over, as the Edmonton Oilers have reached the Stanley Cup Final.

The last time a team based in Canada hoisted the Stanley Cup was on June 9, 1993, when the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Los Angeles Kings in a five-game series. That moment occurred during a different cultural landscape: `Jurassic Park` was dominating the box office, popular sitcoms like `Roseanne` and `Home Improvement` were widely watched, and Janet Jackson`s `That`s the Way Love Goes` topped the music charts.

For 32 consecutive years since that date, the Stanley Cup championship has remained with teams located in the United States. However, the Oilers are currently just two victories away from breaking this streak. Their playoff journey included overcoming an initial 2-0 deficit in the first round against the Los Angeles Kings, before going on a dominant 14-2 run to reach the Final, eliminating the Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars in five games each.

The Final series has featured dramatic moments. In a crucial Game 4, the Oilers staged a remarkable comeback after trailing the Florida Panthers 3-0 early in the game. Facing the possibility of going down 3-1 in the series, Edmonton rallied fiercely, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead in the third period.

Despite Edmonton`s surge, Florida`s Sam Reinhart managed to tie the game with less than 20 seconds left in regulation, sending the game into overtime. The next goal held immense significance for the series balance. Fortunately for Edmonton, Leon Draisaitl once again delivered a decisive play when his pass deflected off a Panthers defender and into the net, securing the overtime win and leveling the series at 2-2.

Securing the remaining two wins will be the most difficult challenge for the Oilers, but they appear to have the necessary components to bring the Stanley Cup back to Canada for the first time since 1993. In the meantime, here is a look at the Stanley Cup drought duration for each current Canadian NHL team:
