LeBron James recently complimented Giannis Antetokounmpo, suggesting he would have been incredibly dominant in earlier eras of basketball, specifically the 1970s. While Antetokounmpo was appreciative, he expressed reservations about comparing different basketball eras.
In an interview on `The Pat McAfee Show,` James joked that Antetokounmpo could score `250 points` per game in the 70s. Following the Bucks` loss to the New York Knicks, Antetokounmpo reacted to these compliments with a humorous remark.
`I think in the 70s, it would be more like 275 points, not 250,` Antetokounmpo quipped.
The Bucks star further explained his preference against comparing eras. He noted that the game has significantly evolved over the past fifty years, and modern players benefit from greater knowledge and advanced training techniques.
`It`s a great compliment, but I don’t like comparing eras,` Antetokounmpo stated. `It`s unfair. If I had played in the 70s, my understanding of the game and training would be limited to that time period. The game progresses. Now in 2020 and beyond, we have a much deeper understanding… You simply cannot compare today`s game with that era.`
Looking back, it`s easy to imagine Antetokounmpo`s dominance in the 70s, especially considering the extensive training and preparation of today`s players. Without these modern advantages, Antetokounmpo believes he would likely play similarly to the players of that time.
`I’d probably play the same way they played if I played in the 70s,` Antetokounmpo concluded.
Despite not scoring 250 points nightly, Antetokounmpo remains a dominant force in today’s NBA. The two-time MVP and 2021 NBA champion is currently averaging impressive stats this season: 30.2 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game.
