As Alex Ovechkin gets closer to Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals of all time, he will be watched by many. Among them will be Gretzky himself, who intends to travel to games as Ovechkin gets closer to the milestone, according to Sportsnet.
After scoring his 887th career goal against the San Jose Sharks last weekend, Ovechkin needs just eight more goals in the remaining 14 games to surpass Gretzky this season. While not guaranteed, Ovechkin has the potential to go on a scoring streak between now and April 17.
As Ovechkin closes in on Gretzky on the all-time goals list, ‘The Great One’ will ensure he is there to witness the pursuit in person. Gretzky and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman are planning to attend multiple games when Ovechkin is on the verge of making history.
‘Alex Ovechkin’s chase for the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring record is a significant event not only for hockey but for the entire sports world,’ stated Jon Weinstein, the league’s chief communications officer. ‘We are excited to celebrate this historic pursuit in various ways that reflect the importance of this incredible moment.’
Ovechkin needs to pick up his scoring pace down the stretch if he wants to catch Gretzky this season, especially after not scoring in the Capitals’ 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.
However, Ovechkin only needs one big game to get within striking distance, and he is no stranger to those. Ovechkin has achieved 32 career hat tricks, and his 33rd would bring him significantly closer to Gretzky’s record.
Ovechkin will continue his quest for greatness when the Capitals host the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night.
