UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev is preparing to move up a weight class, with a title fight confirmed against the new welterweight king, Jack Della Maddalena. The date and specific venue for this highly anticipated champion-versus-champion showdown are still being finalized.
Confirming his official move to 170 pounds, UFC CEO Dana White announced that Makhachev will vacate his lightweight title belt. This decision allows him to pursue championship status in a second division. With the lightweight title now open, Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira are scheduled to face off at UFC 317 in June to crown the division`s next champion.
Makhachev`s opportunity to chase a second world championship was cleared following Jack Della Maddalena`s victory over his friend and frequent training partner, Belal Muhammad, at UFC 315. Makhachev had previously stated he would not move up to challenge Muhammad while his friend held the welterweight title. Della Maddalena`s impressive unanimous decision win secured him the belt and paved the way for this new challenge.
Immediately after his title-winning performance, Della Maddalena expressed interest in facing Islam Makhachev. His wish is now set to be granted, with the fight expected to take place later this year.
Makhachev, currently ranked as the sport`s pound-for-pound number one fighter, takes on this challenge with the goal of becoming a rare two-division champion in the UFC.
Dana White stated that both fighters have agreed to the matchup. The remaining step is determining the exact date and location. Della Maddalena has publicly advocated for the fight to be held in his native Australia.
Regardless of where it happens, the Della Maddalena vs. Makhachev fight is slated for later in 2024. This marks a significant moment as the longest-reigning lightweight champion in UFC history steps up to attempt to capture gold in a new weight class.
