Israel Adesanya Wants Sean Strickland Rematch This Fall

MMA News

Israel Adesanya is targeting a return to the octagon this fall, specifically seeking a rematch against Sean Strickland.

Adesanya experienced a year of highs and lows in 2023. In April, he dramatically reclaimed the middleweight title by knocking out his rival, Alex Pereira, at UFC 287. This victory not only secured the belt but was later recognized as Knockout of the Year. However, just five months later at UFC 293, “The Last Stylebender” lost the title in a decisive performance by Strickland. Now, Adesanya is eager to get his title back and avenge that loss.

Speaking with reporters at the 2025 UFC Hall of Fame ceremony, where he was inducted for his 2019 bout with Kelvin Gastelum, Adesanya confirmed his hope to face Strickland again around September or October.

When asked about the potential fall matchup, Adesanya commented on Strickland`s recent quietness. “I think he’s going through something,” Adesanya said. He mentioned seeing a screenshot suggesting Strickland had gained weight, adding, “I saw it and I was like, oh shit.”

Adesanya reflected on Strickland`s personality. “Sean’s a guy who definitely has a lot of old school stuff, trauma he has to deal with… That’s a Sean Strickland thing to do, but he’s been quiet.”

He concluded his remarks about Strickland with a sarcastic message: “Sean, it’s June, men’s mental health month. I hope you’re looking out for your mental health, and also looking out for your physical health. You fat bitch. [Laughs].”

However, Strickland`s period of quiet didn`t last long. Shortly after Adesanya`s comments, Strickland was involved in a controversial incident in Las Vegas, storming the cage at a Tuff-N-Uff event and punching a fighter who had provoked him after defeating a teammate. It remains unclear if Strickland will face a suspension from athletic commissions for this outburst. Any disciplinary action could potentially complicate or delay Adesanya`s plans for a fall rematch.
