Jack Draper Ready to Lead British Challenge at Wimbledon Post-Murray Era

Sports News

As the first Wimbledon approaches since the retirement of two-time champion Sir Andy Murray, British No. 1 Jack Draper feels prepared to bear the nation`s expectations.

Draper arrives at his home Grand Slam tournament ranked fourth globally, having secured three titles in the past year, notably the Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells in March.

Despite his current high ranking and success, the 23-year-old has limited prior success at Wimbledon, winning only two matches in his career, including a second-round exit to fellow Briton Cameron Norrie in 2024.

Now seen as a potential title contender, Draper faces a challenging path through the draw, with tough possible opponents like Alexander Bublik (who beat him at the French Open), Jakub Mensik, Novak Djokovic, and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner potentially looming.

Draper, set to play Argentina`s Sebastian Baez in his opening match on Tuesday, commented on the pressure: “Naturally, when Andy retired, I was mentioned as the next in line.

“Andy achieved amazing things, was incredibly successful, and became truly loved by the public. It`s clearly a massive legacy to follow. I recognize that.

“However, I believe in my ability and hope I can inspire others, just as Andy did. I`m committed to constant improvement, playing my best tennis, and presenting myself as the player and person I aspire to be.”

Murray`s Support

“Andy has provided me with significant advice and support over the years. A key takeaway is understanding that everyone`s journey is unique.

He also mentioned he prefers not to intrude.

I think he`s hesitant to comment publicly on my progress because he knows firsthand what it`s like to be in this position, constantly being asked about everything.

But I know Andy is there if I ever need him. The time might come when I`ll ask him for some specific insights, and I`m confident he will respond and be as supportive and helpful as he always is.”

Regarding the potentially difficult draw, Draper stated: “I haven`t looked beyond my first match at all. I focus on who I play first. I respect everyone in the tournament.

My focus is solely on facing Baez on Tuesday; I`m not looking ahead. I know he`s a strong player who earned his place here. My attention is entirely on him.”
