Jon Anik Declares Merab Dvalishvili Bantamweight GOAT

MMA News

Veteran commentator Jon Anik asserts that Merab Dvalishvili has already earned the title of the greatest bantamweight of all time.

Dvalishvili is scheduled to defend his title this Saturday in a rematch against Sean O’Malley at UFC 316. A victory would mark his second title defense and extend his winning streak to thirteen consecutive wins. It would also be his fifth victory against a former UFC champion. However, according to Anik, even a potential loss to O`Malley wouldn`t diminish “The Machine`s” already solidified legacy.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, Anik conveyed his strong conviction in Dvalishvili`s GOAT status within the division, while also acknowledging his close personal relationship with former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. Anik emphasized Dvalishvili`s impressive record in the modern era, suggesting that disregarding two early contentious losses, he could effectively be viewed as 14-0 in the UFC, having since amassed an undeniable twelve-fight winning streak.

Anik specifically highlighted Dvalishvili`s formidable run through a series of elite opponents and former champions, including victories over Henry Cejudo, Petr Yan, Jose Aldo, Sean O`Malley (referencing their first encounter or the run to the title), and most recently, a title defense against Umar Nurmagomedov. For Anik, these significant wins clearly position Dvalishvili above other notable bantamweights, including Aljamain Sterling and his friend Dominick Cruz, in the discussion for the greatest of all time.

The bantamweight GOAT conversation is notoriously challenging. Dominick Cruz holds five title defenses, yet his career was significantly hampered by recurrent injuries. Statistically, Cruz has an edge with seven total title fight wins across both the UFC and WEC promotions. Nevertheless, Anik places greater emphasis on the caliber of recent competition, comparing Cruz`s notable wins over fighters like Urijah Faber, T.J. Dillashaw, and Demetrious Johnson to Dvalishvili`s list of elite vanquished foes.

Anik openly admitted a bias towards the modern era of the sport, arguing that the level of skill and athleticism, particularly among top contenders, has advanced considerably since Cruz`s prime years. He believes the standard of fighters in 2025 surpasses that of 2012, reinforcing his perspective that Merab Dvalishvili is currently the standout figure in the bantamweight division.
