Jon Jones Explains Retirement Timing and Addresses Aspinall Controversy

MMA News

Jon Jones has recently addressed the ongoing discussion surrounding his decision to retire from mixed martial arts and his much-debated relationship with fellow heavyweight Tom Aspinall.

The 37-year-old, a former two-division UFC champion, concluded his illustrious career, but his departure leaves questions, particularly concerning the unresolved situation with Tom Aspinall. Jones, who held the undisputed heavyweight belt before retiring, faced considerable criticism for not accepting a fight against Aspinall, the longtime interim champion who has now taken over as the undisputed titleholder.

Speaking out on social media platforms on Friday, Jones shared his perspective on the circumstances, disputing claims that he was responsible for the potential clash not happening.

In a social media post that has since been removed, Jones wrote, “If the fight was done, trust me, I would be fighting.” He clarified that while negotiations did commence at one point, the agreement was “never done.” Jones maintained that his role at the time was to “sit back and be quiet” about the situation, stating he was simply “enjoying [his] life,” and felt this should have been obvious.

However, Jones`s assertion of staying quiet is contrasted by previous instances where he publicly engaged in the feud with Aspinall, including a notably strong response to one of Aspinall`s Instagram posts.

Jones also stated he was advised “1,000 times” to “just reconsider and just give it more time” regarding his fighting future.

UFC CEO Dana White presented a different narrative, suggesting that the fight between Jones and Aspinall *was* a finalized deal, but Jones ultimately “changed his mind” and opted for retirement instead.

Aspinall, for his part, has indicated he would still be open to facing Jones in the future but is presently focused on defending his undisputed heavyweight championship against other active contenders in the division.

Continuing to post online, Jones defended his career achievements and responded to critics, whom he labeled “trolls.” He highlighted his record of championship titles, stating he holds more combined titles than multiple fighters mentioned in online commentary, suggesting this legacy justifies his decision to retire.
