LeBron James recently appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and discussed various topics. He announced the relaunch of his podcast `Mind the Game` with Steve Nash and spoke about playing with Luka Dončić and his love for football. He also addressed rumors about spending over $1 million annually on body maintenance, dismissing them as unfounded.
The interview was extensive and insightful, with LeBron sharing his honest opinions. Here are some key highlights.
LeBron Jokes About Giannis Dominating in the 70s
A common debate involves comparing current players to past eras. Some argue today`s players wouldn`t succeed in the more physical past, while others believe they would dominate. LeBron leans towards the latter, particularly regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo.
`You think Giannis couldn`t play in the 70s NBA?` James questioned. `Giannis Antetokounmpo would score 250 points per game in the 70s. No disrespect, but it`s true. And Kyrie Irving… they would tell Kyrie he can`t dribble anymore.`
LeBron is confident he could excel in any era. `I could play in any era. Some older guys say, “LeBron James couldn`t play in our era.”`
`Can`t put myself in [Luka`s] shoes`
The Mavericks trading Dončić was surprising. However, he and James have quickly formed a strong partnership.
`Luka is called “Luka Magic” for a reason; he`s exceptional,` James stated. `I can`t fully understand his situation, never being traded myself. But I know committing to a franchise for seven years, feeling settled, and then suddenly being traded is a shock. Regardless of the destination or teammates, it`s a system shock.`
LeBron advised Dončić to maintain his playing style and assured him the team would adapt.
`I told him he needs to remain himself to reach our potential,` James explained. `We will adjust and figure things out with him because we need him to be exactly who he is.`
This approach has benefited the Lakers. Despite recent setbacks, they`ve shown strong performance since the All-Star break and could be a significant playoff contender due to Dončić`s presence.
James` Relationship with Michael Jordan
LeBron openly acknowledges Jordan`s influence and inspiration. He wears No. 23 because of Jordan, confirming it on McAfee`s show. While not close currently, James hopes this will change post-retirement.
`We are good,` James said, noting they don`t communicate much. He believes this is because he is still actively playing. `I`m still playing, focused on my career.`
He compared it to his relationship with Kobe Bryant.
`Kobe and I didn`t have a real relationship until the Olympics, which improved it greatly,` James shared. `It was always competitive between us. Our relationship significantly improved when I joined the Lakers and he retired. I think with MJ, it’s because I’m still playing. He`s incredibly competitive and doesn`t want to engage while I`m still wearing number 23 and being compared to him.`
Being the Face of the League
LeBron recently sympathized with Anthony Edwards, who rejected the idea of being the league`s face. Edwards questioned why anyone would want that responsibility given the constant criticism. James echoed these sentiments, reflecting on his own experience.
`I never sought to be the face of the league, but I recognized the responsibility to represent the league well,` James stated. `I aimed to be a role model and modern citizen. Some players didn`t want to be role models or fully commit to the game. I saw an opportunity to play the game I love and inspire fans. Being the face of the league emerged from that.`
LeBron Comments on Lottery Conspiracies
The NBA might not appreciate this part, but James discussed the 2003 draft lottery where Cleveland won the No. 1 pick, enabling them to draft him. Conspiracy theories suggest the league manipulates lotteries for specific outcomes. James hinted at this possibility.
`During the lottery, Cleveland got the No. 1 pick?` James remarked. `It’s quite a coincidence. Keep LeBron home. Patrick Ewing to the Knicks, Derrick Rose to the Bulls—I understand the pattern.`
James seemed to be joking, but his comments will likely fuel existing conspiracy theories.
