Leicester Tigers Part Ways with Experienced Fly-Half Ben Volavola

Rugby News

Leicester Tigers have confirmed that experienced fly-half Ben Volavola has left the club after his contract was not renewed for the upcoming season.

The Fijian international joined the Tigers ahead of the last campaign, arriving from French Top 14 side Agen. His arrival was seen as adding depth and experience to the Welford Road squad. However, his tenure proved to be relatively short-lived.

During his single season with Leicester, the 34-year-old made a modest nine appearances across all competitions, accumulating 25 points. He did not manage to secure a consistent starting role in the team, a situation that, according to the club, was compounded by periods sideline due to injury.

Richard Wilks, Leicester`s General Manager, commented on Volavola`s departure. He acknowledged Volavola as a “good guy” who initially impressed during his preseason trial, joining the club “without any guarantees.” Wilks highlighted Volavola`s professionalism throughout his time at the club and noted that he made a significant “contribution off the field, which is difficult to measure.” Despite the challenges posed by injuries, Wilks stated that Volavola played a part in the team`s Premiership playoff efforts. On behalf of the club, he extended best wishes for Volavola`s future endeavours.

Volavola is a well-travelled player with a notable career history that includes stints at Super Rugby franchises such as the Crusaders, Waratahs, and Melbourne Rebels, as well as other prominent European clubs including Bordeaux, Racing 92, and Perpignan, prior to his move to Agen and subsequently Leicester.

His departure means the veteran playmaker is now a free agent, seeking his next opportunity in professional rugby following the conclusion of his single season with the East Midlands club.
