The remarkable career of Mark Kerr will not fade from memory.
It was revealed during the UFC 316 broadcast on Saturday that Kerr, age 56, is slated for induction into the UFC Hall of Fame`s Pioneer Wing. The induction ceremony is scheduled for June 28 in Las Vegas. Kerr, a two-time UFC heavyweight tournament victor, was present at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., to witness a video honoring his achievements.
This announcement coincides with a period of heightened mainstream recognition for Kerr. A biographical film detailing his life, titled The Smashing Machine, is set for release on October 3rd, featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson portraying Kerr.
Further emphasizing the deliberate timing of this Hall of Fame honor alongside The Smashing Machine`s promotion, it was also announced Saturday that Dwayne Johnson is slated to deliver Kerr`s induction speech on June 28.
Kerr was a prominent figure in the early era of the UFC. He secured victories in the heavyweight tournaments at UFC 14 and UFC 15 in 1997. True to his moniker, the fighter from Ohio demonstrated brutal effectiveness, winning all but one of his initial eleven bouts in the first round. However, he was unable to sustain this level of success, with a loss to Kazuyuki Fujita in 2000 marking the beginning of his decline.
Following that defeat, Kerr managed only three wins out of his subsequent thirteen fights, concluding his career in 2009 with a final record of 15-11 (1 NC).
Beyond the UFC, Kerr played a crucial role in the establishment and success of the now-renowned Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) competitions. The former Division-I champion wrestler triumphed in ADCC tournaments in 1999 and 2000, and was later recognized as part of the organization`s inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2022.
When Kerr takes the stage at T-Mobile Arena for the UFC Hall of Fame ceremony, he will join a distinguished group of 2025 inductees. These include Vitor Belfort (Pioneer Wing), Amanda Nunes and Robbie Lawler (Modern Wing), the memorable UFC 236 title bout between Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum (Fight Wing), and producer Craig Piligian (Contributor Wing).
Notable past members of the Pioneer Wing include legends such as Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, and Anderson Silva.
