The 2025 NHL playoffs continue to provide nightly excitement. Thursday night featured several standout performances, notably from Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel.
Facing a potential 2-0 series hole heading to Carolina, Tom Wilson stepped up his play for the Washington Capitals, helping them tie the series. Beyond his usual physical presence that bothered the Hurricanes, Wilson displayed skill, contributing to John Carlson`s game-winning goal.
In the later matchup, Jack Eichel of the Golden Knights was constantly involved, seemingly having the puck glued to his stick. The Vegas star showed excellent vision, setting up his team`s initial three goals. He particularly excelled on the power play, expertly dissecting the Oilers` penalty kill to create two goals for Victor Olofsson.
Despite Eichel`s impressive effort, his performance was ultimately surpassed by the sport`s top player. Eichel played a key role in the Golden Knights` third-period rally to force overtime, but it was Connor McDavid who delivered the decisive moment when the game hung in the balance.
Following another thrilling evening of playoff action, here are the top individual performances, recognized as our 3 Stars of the Night.
#3 Star: Jack Eichel | C | Golden Knights
Eichel was arguably the most conspicuous player in Game 2, generating scoring opportunities seemingly every time he possessed the puck. During a game where Vegas struggled at times defensively and in goal, Eichel`s play rescued them. His standout effort kept the Golden Knights competitive, though the overall team performance was inconsistent.
Eichel achieved a career-high 66 assists during the regular season, and this enhanced playmaking has carried over effectively into the playoffs. He was instrumental in Vegas`s first three goals, assisting on all of them. His finest assist came during a third-period power play; Eichel patiently waited for an opening before delivering a flawless cross-ice pass to Victor Olofsson, who finished with a one-timer.
#2 Star: Tom Wilson | RW | Capitals
Tom Wilson perfectly embodies the type of player fans despise when he`s an opponent but adore when he`s on their side. This was evident in Game 2, where he actively tried to provoke the Hurricanes while also contributing offensively.
As expected, Wilson delivered numerous hits, but his influence extended beyond physical play. The powerful forward demonstrated finesse on the Capitals` winning goal. Positioned in the power play bumper spot, Wilson showed remarkable awareness, spotting an incoming John Carlson at the back post for a simple finish. He completed his strong performance by scoring the empty-netter to secure the victory for Washington.
#1 Star: Connor McDavid | C | Oilers
For approximately 75 minutes, the Golden Knights did an admirable job of limiting Connor McDavid`s impact. However, such containment is rarely sustainable against a player of his caliber. With the game on the line in overtime, McDavid produced the decisive moment, propelling Edmonton to a 2-0 series advantage.
About five minutes into overtime, McDavid gathered the puck in the neutral zone and accelerated. As he surged towards the Vegas blue line, he showcased incredible stick-handling skills, notably deking past Eichel. This created a 2-on-1 opportunity with Leon Draisaitl, and McDavid perfectly passed to his fellow superstar for an easy tap-in winner. This goal marked McDavid`s 14th point of the playoffs, placing him second in league scoring.
