Mitchell Accepts Responsibility for Cavaliers’ Recent Setbacks

NBA News

Cavaliers` star Donovan Mitchell had a disappointing game against the Phoenix Suns on Friday, scoring only seven points with a poor shooting performance of 2-for-18. Following the 123-112 defeat, the All-Star guard took personal responsibility for the team`s loss.

“This one is on me,” Mitchell told reporters. “When the team leader isn`t performing, this is the result. Of course, we need to improve our defense and rebounding, but my lack of performance is the main issue. If I`m not playing at the level I need to be, we won`t achieve our goals.”

Despite currently holding the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 56-14 record, the Cavaliers have recently struggled, losing four consecutive games after a franchise-record 16-game winning streak. Mitchell`s recent performances have been uncharacteristically inefficient.

“It`s been a recurring issue for the past four games, coinciding with our four losses,” Mitchell stated. “I need to play better, it`s that simple. While there are other factors like Kevin Durant`s high score, ultimately, it comes down to my performance. I have to step up for the team. I`ve been consistent throughout the year, but this current slump is on me.”

Mitchell had missed the two previous games due to a groin injury and the Cavaliers have lost every game since his return. He dismissed concerns about his health on Friday, stating, “I’m fine.” However, his shooting struggles predate his absence. In his last six games, Mitchell has averaged only 18.8 points with a 29.6% shooting accuracy, including a mere 14% from three-point range (7-for-50).

Evan Mobley of the Cavaliers defended Mitchell, telling reporters, “I don’t think it’s solely his fault. We all started slowly. We weren’t securing rebounds or getting defensive stops. Shots weren`t falling for him and others, but we can`t place all the blame on him. We need to start games with more energy and intensity. Even when our shots aren`t going in, we can contribute in other areas.”

Cavs` guard Ty Jerome emphasized the need for the team to play with more “force.”

“I don’t believe we are playing with the same level of energy and effort,” Jerome commented after the loss to the Suns. “It`s easy for it to slip for a game or two, and then suddenly you`ve lost four in a row. These are strong teams with players like Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. We can`t afford to be complacent. This losing streak is a valuable lesson for us.”

Mitchell expressed that he prefers to face these challenges now rather than in the playoffs, believing it will strengthen the team`s character. “I`m not avoiding criticism,” he affirmed. “This is my role, my responsibility.” He added that he will “keep working” to regain his form.

“I thrive in these situations,” Mitchell said. “This tests your mental fortitude, pushing you to keep going. I have full confidence in my abilities; my performance will improve. But until I return to my usual level, this is the consequence.”

While Mitchell`s struggles are noticeable, they are not the sole reason for Cleveland`s recent downturn. Although the Cavaliers` offense was weak in the first of the four losses, a more significant issue is their defense, allowing high points per 100 possessions to their opponents in recent games. They have also been out-rebounded during this losing streak.

Mitchell is correct in acknowledging his need to perform better. He has been having an All-NBA caliber season, and this past week represents his only significant slump.

“Ultimately, the responsibility lies with me,” Mitchell concluded. “I will improve and find a solution for the team.”
