The Stanley Cup Playoffs have delivered plenty of drama recently, and Friday`s games continued that trend with notable performances and crucial results.
Friday`s action started with the Florida Panthers securing an overtime victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning 5-4. Veteran Panthers forward Brad Marchand netted the deciding goal after Morgan Rielly of the Maple Leafs forced overtime by tying the game late in the third period. Marchand was among the five different players who scored for Florida, a win that narrowed Toronto`s series advantage to 2-1.
In stark contrast, the game in Winnipeg was a dominant performance by the Jets, who shut out the Dallas Stars 4-0. This win leveled their second-round series at one game each. Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers contributed with two goals and an assist, and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck achieved his first shutout of the current postseason, stopping all 22 shots.
Following a night of significant playoff action, here`s a closer look at three standout players from Friday`s games:
3. Nikolaj Ehlers, F | Jets
After missing the first five games of the opening round against the Blues due to a late-season foot injury, Nikolaj Ehlers is showing signs of returning to his top form. In his fourth game back, Game 2 against the Stars, he recorded two goals and an assist.
Early in Friday`s game, Ehlers displayed offensive urgency. Just over three minutes in, he attempted a shot from the slot. Though blocked, he recovered the puck, shot again, and after a save by Jake Oettinger, Gabriel Vilardi scored on the rebound (giving Ehlers an assist). Ehlers then scored himself later in the period when his shot redirected off Esa Lindell. He sealed his performance with an empty-net goal late in the game. Ehlers led the Jets with six shots on goal, playing aggressively throughout the night.
2. Brad Marchand, F | Panthers
Veteran forward Brad Marchand delivered for the Florida Panthers when they needed him most, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime of Game 3.
15:27 into overtime, Marchand received a pass from Dmitry Kulikov and showed great patience in the offensive zone. He skated towards the far face-off circle and fired a shot that deflected off Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly, sailing over goaltender Joseph Woll to secure the victory. This goal demonstrated how sometimes a well-placed shot towards the net, even with a bit of luck via a deflection, can be the decisive factor.
1. Connor Hellebuyck, G | Jets
Connor Hellebuyck, last season`s Vezina Trophy winner and a finalist again this year, struggled in the opening round against the Blues with a 3.71 GAA and .830 SV%. However, he returned to elite form in Friday`s Game 2 victory.
Facing a potent Stars offense, Hellebuyck stopped all 22 shots, earning a shutout. He was composed throughout the game, making numerous crucial saves. Notably, in the second period, he made several stops to keep Dallas scoreless. One sequence involved stopping a shot from Thomas Harley and then quickly sliding across to glove a rebound that went directly to Evgenii Dadonov. This caliber of goaltending from Hellebuyck is essential for the Jets` hopes of winning this series against the Stars.
