NHL Playoffs 2025: Connor Hellebuyck records second shutout of series, highlights 3 Stars of the Night

NHL News

The Carolina Hurricanes have advanced to the Eastern Conference Final after defeating the Washington Capitals 3-1 in Game 5 on Thursday night, sealed by a late goal from Andrei Svechnikov. In the Western Conference, the Winnipeg Jets kept their season alive with a decisive 4-0 victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 5.

Svechnikov found the net for the third consecutive game after Carolina struggled to solve Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson for much of the contest. The Hurricanes also benefited from a stellar performance in net by Frederik Andersen, who stopped 18 of 19 shots. This win sends the Hurricanes to their second Eastern Conference Final appearance in the last three seasons.

On the other side of the bracket, the Jets saw a dominant performance from goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who stopped all 22 shots he faced to earn his second shutout of the series. Nikolaj Ehlers led the Jets` offense with a pair of goals.

With another busy night of playoff hockey concluded, let`s look at some of the most impactful performances from Thursday`s games.

3. Andrei Svechnikov | RW | Hurricanes

Svechnikov continued to be the primary offensive force for the Hurricanes when they needed it most. He scored the game-winning goal late in the third period to clinch the 3-1 series victory. In doing so, Svechnikov became just the fourth player in franchise history (including the Hartford Whalers era) to score a game-winning goal in the final two minutes of regulation in a playoff game.

Late in the game, defenseman Sean Walker initiated the play and exchanged passes with Svechnikov in the offensive zone. Receiving the puck back, Svechnikov fired it from a difficult angle near the bottom of the face-off circle and found the back of the net.

In a series characterized by limited scoring, Svechnikov consistently rose to the occasion, providing crucial offensive production. His game-winner was his eighth goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, ranking him second behind only Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen, who has nine. Svechnikov is expected to be one of the Hurricanes` key players when they face the winner of the Florida Panthers vs. Toronto Maple Leafs series in the next round.

2. Connor Hellebuyck | G | Jets

Connor Hellebuyck`s postseason has seen its ups and downs, but he delivered a crucial performance when his team faced elimination. Hellebuyck stopped all 22 shots on goal, helping Winnipeg extend their season on Thursday night.

Hellebuyck made numerous high-difficulty saves that prevented the Stars from generating momentum. Early in the second period, he made a sensational glove save on a backhanded shot attempt from Thomas Harley from close range. Later in the period, he made a vital defensive play by executing a perfectly timed poke check on Wyatt Johnston who was driving to the net, which subsequently led to a Winnipeg rush and a goal by Mark Scheifele.

After allowing a combined eight goals in the previous two games, Hellebuyck was a formidable presence in net during Game 5, recording his second shutout of the series. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner showcased his elite capabilities under pressure, providing his best effort of the playoffs to keep Winnipeg`s season alive.

1. Nikolaj Ehlers | LW | Jets

After missing most of the opening round, Nikolaj Ehlers has quickly demonstrated his vital importance to Winnipeg`s offensive attack. He scored two goals on five shots and recorded a takeaway during Thursday`s game.

With the Jets on a five-on-three power play early in the third period, Ehlers provided essential insurance. A pass sequence found him open near the net, and he successfully slid the puck past Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger. He later added an empty-net goal to seal the win. Ehlers now has five goals in the series and continues to be a driving force for the Jets` offense.
