The 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs have already featured some outstanding individual performances, and Tuesday night was no exception. Jaccob Slavin guided the Carolina Hurricanes to a Game 1 victory against the Washington Capitals, while the Edmonton Oilers` dynamic duo ignited another comeback in Las Vegas.
The evening started with a tight, low-scoring game in Washington D.C., where the Hurricanes and Capitals were tied 1-1 after regulation. Slavin was key in this defensive battle and emerged as the hero in overtime.
In Las Vegas, the Golden Knights took an early 2-0 lead in the first period, but the Oilers turned things around in the second. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were instrumental in this shift, showcasing their brilliance and combining for four points. Once they find their rhythm, it`s difficult for even top defensive teams to contain them.
Following another exciting night of playoff hockey, let`s highlight the top individual performances with our 3 Stars of the Night.
3. Leon Draisaitl | C | Edmonton Oilers
It was another comeback win for the Oilers on Tuesday, and Draisaitl once again scored a crucial goal. Trailing 2-1 early in the third period, Draisaitl displayed impressive hand-eye coordination and hockey sense.
After Evan Bouchard`s deflected shot bounced off Adin Hill`s glove and hung in the air, Draisaitl swatted it with his backhand immediately upon it hitting the ice. The Oilers` forward skillfully banked it off Hill`s pad and into the net to level the score. Besides this highlight-reel goal, Draisaitl also assisted Edmonton`s first goal with a precise cross-ice pass to Connor McDavid during a perfect zone entry.
2. Connor McDavid | C | Edmonton Oilers
Although McDavid didn`t score in the Oilers` Game 1 win against the Golden Knights, he was the primary catalyst for their comeback. Similar to what he showed in the first round, McDavid elevated his game when his team was trailing, altering the game`s momentum with several exceptional plays.
The Oilers captain recorded assists on both of his team`s first two goals, making superb plays on each. For the first goal, McDavid delivered a perfect pass around Brayden McNabb to find Corey Perry wide open in front of Adin Hill. On the second, McDavid displayed his incredible speed with an end-to-end rush, leading to Draisaitl tapping in the rebound from Bouchard`s shot.
1. Jaccob Slavin | D | Carolina Hurricanes
In Game 1 against the Capitals, Slavin delivered a nearly flawless shutdown defensive performance and scored the game-winning goal in overtime. Over his 18 minutes played at five-on-five, the Hurricanes held significant advantages in shot attempts (+23), scoring chances (+12), and high-danger scoring chances (+5), according to Natural Stat Trick. Given that Washington finished second in the regular season with 286 goals, this was a stellar defensive display from Slavin.
Offensively, Slavin led the Hurricanes with five shots. His fifth shot proved to be the decisive one, slipping under the pad of Capitals goalie Logan Thompson just 3:06 into overtime. Slavin`s impact at both ends of the ice tonight was unmatched.
