Less than three weeks into the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, we`ve already witnessed significant moments, and Wednesday night added more excitement.
The action began with the Maple Leafs edging out the Panthers in a 4-3 victory. Key to their win were two-point efforts from Max Pacioretty, Max Domi, and Morgan Rielly. Pacioretty, in particular, delivered another spectacular performance with a goal and an assist, driving the Maple Leafs to a commanding 2-0 series lead as they head to South Florida.
Meanwhile, Mikko Rantanen maintained his stellar form, guiding the Stars to a 3-2 victory over the Jets in their series opener. Rantanen made franchise history by recording the first natural hat trick for the Stars, while goaltender Jake Oettinger was crucial, stopping 30 of 32 shots to secure the win in Winnipeg.
Following another exciting night on the ice, here`s a closer look at some of the most spectacular individual efforts from Wednesday`s games.
3. William Nylander | RW | Maple Leafs
Toronto relies on its core forwards like Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Mitch Marner, and John Tavares for offense in the postseason. Nylander delivered on Wednesday, scoring a goal that demonstrated he`s stepping up. The Maple Leafs forward is now tied for second in playoff scoring with 13 points, trailing only Mikko Rantanen.
Nylander`s sixth playoff goal came 4:18 into the second period, leveling the game at 2-2. Pacioretty gained possession at center ice and started a two-on-one rush with Nylander. Opting not to shoot, Pacioretty made a backhanded pass to Nylander, who gathered the puck and lifted it over Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Nylander has been hot, scoring five goals in his last three games and finding the net in three straight appearances.
2. Max Pacioretty | LW | Maple Leafs
Since returning to the lineup before Game 3 against the Senators in the previous round, Max Pacioretty has been exceptionally impressive. The veteran forward contributed a goal and an assist on Wednesday, bringing his total to six points over his last three playoff games, with goals in two of those contests.
Pacioretty influenced Game 2 in multiple ways. On the power play, he positioned himself near the net and skillfully deflected Rielly`s point shot just under the crossbar for a goal. Beyond scoring, he also demonstrated his passing prowess by assisting on Nylander`s goal in the second period.
1. Mikko Rantanen | RW | Stars
Rantanen continued his red-hot play, picking up right where he left off after a sensational Game 7 where he scored a hat trick against his former team. Against the Jets, Rantanen delivered a natural hat trick, powering his team to a crucial Game 1 road win. He is now just the third player in franchise history (dating back to the Minnesota North Stars era) to score at least six goals across a four-game playoff span.
Rantanen`s scoring surge began 8:43 into the second period with a display of remarkable individual skill. After teammate Evgenii Dadonov`s one-timer was stopped by Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, Rantanen, while falling, swatted the rebound into the net with one hand. He capped his hat trick when a pass he attempted deflected off defenseman Dylan Samberg`s stick and into the net. The Stars forward consistently finds ways to score, validating Dallas GM Jim Nill`s foresight in acquiring Rantanen at the trade deadline.
