The Florida Panthers are heading to the Eastern Conference Final for the third consecutive season. They secured their spot by overwhelming the Toronto Maple Leafs with a commanding 6-1 victory in front of the Toronto crowd on Sunday night.
A major difference-maker for Florida in this contest was defenseman Seth Jones, who arguably played one of the best games of his professional career. Jones contributed significantly on offense, scoring a goal and adding an assist. He was equally effective defensively, dominating during five-on-five play and quickly transitioning the puck from their own end to start offensive rushes after turnovers.
Additionally, Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov once again demonstrated his immense value to the squad. While consistently matched up against Toronto`s top offensive threats, he still managed to positively impact the score sheet without compromising his defensive responsibilities.
For the fourth game in a row, goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was nearly impenetrable for the Panthers. To Florida`s credit, their defense limited the number of shots Bobrovsky faced, but he remained sharp and made crucial saves whenever the Leafs managed to break through the defense.
With Game 7 now decided, let`s recognize the top performers from tonight`s decisive contest by highlighting the 3 Stars of the Night.
3. Sergei Bobrovsky | G | Florida Panthers
After struggling in the first three games of the series, where he allowed a combined 13 goals and the Panthers trailed 2-1, Bobrovsky rediscovered his elite form starting in Game 4 and has maintained that high level of play since.
In Sunday`s game, Bobrovsky didn`t face a barrage of shots as the Panthers largely controlled play, but he was called upon to make several key stops. His most critical save came in the first period with the game still scoreless, when he stretched out to deny Scott Laughton on a breakaway. This save was pivotal, as a goal there could have significantly altered the momentum and outcome of the game.
2. Aleksander Barkov | C | Florida Panthers
Tonight provided yet another clear example of Barkov`s indispensable contribution to the Panthers` success. While he tallied two points, his most significant influence was felt on the defensive side. Barkov consistently drew the toughest matchups and excelled in those minutes.
Barkov recorded assists on goals by Seth Jones and Sam Reinhart, playing a vital role in both plays. However, his defensive performance truly stood out. Barkov spent extensive time matched up against Toronto`s key forwards like Mitchell Marner, Auston Matthews, and Matthew Knies. According to Natural Stat Trick, during these five-on-five matchups, Barkov`s line held impressive expected goals shares of 68.6%, 61.6%, and 61.5% respectively. Widely considered one of the best defensive forwards in hockey, Barkov emphatically reinforced that reputation in Game 7.
1. Seth Jones | D | Florida Panthers
These playoffs have marked a significant revitalization for Seth Jones, a player who had been on less successful Chicago Blackhawks teams before being acquired by the Panthers at this year`s trade deadline. Jones has flourished in Florida, and he was the undisputed star of Game 7 against the Maple Leafs.
Jones initiated the scoring by choosing to shoot during a 2-on-1 rush. It was the correct decision, as he fired a powerful shot that beat Joseph Woll just over the shoulder and under the crossbar. Later in the same period, Jones started the odd-man rush that led to Jonah Gadjovich`s goal, making the score 3-0. Jones was impactful all over the ice, and perhaps his most impressive moment was a goal that was ultimately disallowed. Defensively, Florida dominated Toronto whenever Jones was on the ice during five-on-five play.
