Following three consecutive defeats to the Florida Panthers, some questioned the Toronto Maple Leafs` chances. However, Toronto revitalized their playoff hopes on Friday night, securing a dominant 2-0 victory in Game 6 in South Florida against the reigning champions, forcing a series decider.
After a lopsided 6-1 loss in Game 5 that raised doubts about their resilience, the Maple Leafs responded forcefully. Playing on the road in Florida, they stifled the Panthers` high-powered offense, which had scored six goals just two nights prior.
Crucially for Toronto, Auston Matthews netted the decisive goal in the third period. Breaking the scoreless deadlock, he drove towards the net on the rush and beat Sergei Bobrovsky with a powerful wrist shot. This was Matthews` first goal of the series, a significant moment for the team captain under pressure entering Game 6.
Now, the Maple Leafs and Panthers will play a decisive Game 7 in Toronto on Sunday night. Before that, the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars will play Game 6 on Saturday night, and the Stars have the chance to close out that series on home ice.
