The Florida Panthers continued their impressive run in the opening game of the Eastern Conference Final. Just two days after a decisive Game 7 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida traveled to Raleigh and secured a dominant 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1.
Florida quickly took control in the first period. Carter Verhaeghe opened the scoring with a skillful backhand shot that beat Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen high. Aaron Ekblad extended the lead shortly after, establishing a lead that proved insurmountable.
Carolina captain Sebastian Aho pulled one back late in the first with a goal that drew some debate, but the score remained no closer. Florida`s scoring depth was evident as five different players found the net. Sergei Bobrovsky also delivered a solid performance in goal, stopping 31 of 33 shots.
This loss marked the 13th consecutive defeat for the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final, a difficult streak dating back to 2009. Carolina will look to end this run in Game 2 on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, the Western Conference Final features a rematch of last year`s series between the Dallas Stars and the Edmonton Oilers. Dallas advanced after a hard-fought six-game series against the Winnipeg Jets, while Edmonton eliminated the Vegas Golden Knights in just five games and has had more rest.
This series promises offensive fireworks, pitting Mikko Rantanen, the playoffs` top scorer, and the Stars against a powerful Oilers squad led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
