On Sunday, the NHL`s top players delivered outstanding performances as the second round of the NHL playoffs continued with two games. Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen continued his phenomenal play, and Sergei Bobrovsky helped the Florida Panthers secure a Game 4 victory.
The Winnipeg Jets likely felt confident in their defensive strategy after preventing Rantanen from scoring in Game 2, but that success was short-lived. Rantanen erupted for three more points – a goal and two assists – powering the Stars to a 5-2 win and a 2-1 series lead.
Rantanen wasn`t the only member of the Stars troubling the Jets. Thomas Harley was effective in all three zones. A rising star on the blue line, Harley logged significant defensive minutes while also contributing offensively. He was noticeable throughout Game 3, and his presence has been invaluable in the absence of Miro Heiskanen.
Finally, the Panthers evened their series with the Toronto Maple Leafs at 2-2 with a strong performance from Bobrovsky in net. Bobrovsky faced some bad bounces in the Panthers` Game 3 win but shook it off to make crucial saves en route to a shutout victory on Sunday night.
With another night of playoff hockey concluded, let`s highlight the best individual efforts with our 3 Stars of the Night.
3. Thomas Harley | D | Dallas Stars
Heiskanen is still sidelined in this postseason, but the Stars have managed the situation effectively because Harley has stepped up as a reliable top defenseman. Game 3 against the Jets was just another example of Harley moving closer to becoming a widely recognized name in the league.
Harley began the game by earning a secondary assist on Roope Hintz`s power-play goal, and he also found the back of the net late in the first period when Mikael Granlund found him open in the high slot during a delayed penalty call. Beyond his offensive contributions, Harley was exceptionally solid defensively while playing challenging minutes. According to Natural Stat Trick, Harley led Dallas in five-on-five ice time by a significant margin, and the team controlled 60.9% of the expected goals when he was on the ice.
2. Mikko Rantanen | RW | Dallas Stars
After holding Rantanen off the scoresheet in Game 2, the Jets might have believed they had discovered a way to neutralize the big Finnish winger. However, Rantanen responded by putting up another three-point performance, bouncing back from a quieter showing.
Rantanen registered a goal and two assists in Game 3, and his first goal was particularly impressive. He received the puck on the rush, completely faked out Dylan Samberg with a pump fake, spinning him around, and then precisely picked his spot past Connor Hellebuyck. That goal was Rantanen`s ninth of the postseason, leading the entire NHL, and he now has at least three points in five of his last six games. Over that red-hot stretch, Rantanen has accumulated a total of 17 points.
To emphasize how remarkable Rantanen`s current run is, the Stars` second goal in Game 3 broke his streak of being credited with a point on 13 consecutive Dallas goals.
1. Sergei Bobrovsky | G | Florida Panthers
In Game 3, Bobrovsky simply had no luck, watching multiple goals deflect off his own teammates into the net – a situation that could easily shake a goaltender`s confidence. However, Bobrovsky remained composed and delivered an excellent performance, earning a shutout in Sunday`s game to tie the series.
The Panthers did a good job of limiting the workload for Bobrovsky in Game 4, but the Maple Leafs possess a dangerous lineup that doesn`t require much space to create chances. Despite this, Bobrovsky didn`t give them an inch. The Panthers` netminder stopped all 22 shots he faced, including several high-quality opportunities from players like Auston Matthews. According to Natural Stat Trick, Bobrovsky saved 1.8 goals above expected and thwarted seven high-danger shots.
