Novak Djokovic Advances to Miami Open Quarter-Finals After Victory Over Lorenzo Musetti

Sports News

In a commanding display at the Miami Open, Novak Djokovic defeated Lorenzo Musetti with a score of 6-2, 6-2, securing his place in the quarter-finals. This victory marks Djokovic`s most convincing performance since the Australian Open.

The match, which was delayed due to rain, saw a shift in momentum after Djokovic expressed his frustration to the chair umpire regarding a serve-clock warning early in the first set.

Seemingly sparked by this moment, Djokovic took control, breaking serve in the subsequent game to establish a 4-2 lead. He then maintained dominance throughout the remainder of the match, cheered on by a supportive crowd that included tennis legends Serena Williams and Juan Martin del Potro.

“I was star-struck. It was amazing to see DelPo here, a long-time friend and rival, and I appreciate his support,” Djokovic commented. “It was the first time having DelPo in my box, so I`m very thankful for him coming. And Serena`s presence was also a delightful surprise.”

Djokovic, a six-time Miami Open champion, showcased his skill with a stunning backhand winner to secure a 5-2 lead in the second set. He ultimately won the match when Musetti committed a double fault on match point.

“My performance is improving as the tournament progresses, which is exactly what I aim for,” Djokovic told Sky Sports` Gigi Salmon. “Overall, it was a fantastic match, made even more special by having Serena courtside. It might have been only the first or second time she`s watched me play live, so I felt a little extra pressure to perform. Having Del Potro in my box as well, another long-time rival and friend, definitely motivated me to deliver.”

Djokovic Reflects on Coaching Relationship with Rival Andy Murray

Djokovic also shared insights into his coaching partnership with Andy Murray. “We`ve known each other for about 25 years since our junior days, but as rivals, we didn`t interact deeply. Recently, during a rain delay before today`s match, we had a very engaging conversation,” he revealed.

“I`ve always held immense respect for Andy as a player, and now even more as a person. He`s genuinely a great guy, and I`m grateful for his support and dedication to my performance. It still feels somewhat surreal to have one of my biggest rivals as my coach. Seeing him passionately engaged in my box, I sometimes have to remind myself it`s real. It`s been a great experience.”

“We are both committed to maximizing this player-coach relationship and also enjoying our time together. Miami has been ideal for this. We arrived a week early, played golf, had dinners, and are genuinely enjoying the experience.”

Upcoming Match

In the next round, Novak Djokovic is set to compete against Sebastian Korda, who defeated Gael Monfils. Matteo Berrettini also advanced, overcoming Alex de Minaur and is scheduled to face Taylor Fritz. Francisco Cerundolo will play against Grigor Dimitrov after his victory over Casper Ruud.

Women`s Tournament Update

In the women`s singles, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka progressed to the semi-finals by defeating Qinwen Zheng. She will next face Jasmine Paolini, who won against Magda Linette.
