In a surprising turn of events at the Stuttgart final, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka suffered a defeat against Jelena Ostapenko, losing 6-4, 6-1. This victory gave Ostapenko, an unseeded player, her first singles title of 2025.
For Sabalenka, this match marked her fourth consecutive final loss on the Stuttgart clay court. Ostapenko immediately established dominance, breaking Sabalenka`s serve in the very first game.
Ostapenko`s path to the final included a victory over world No. 2 Iga Swiatek, and this win against Sabalenka is her first ever against the Belarusian player.
The world No. 24 Ostapenko claimed the first set 6-4 after both players exchanged breaks. She then dominated the second set, winning 6-1 by securing 16 of 18 points, breaking Sabalenka`s serve twice, and quickly taking a 5-1 lead.
Sabalenka then gave Ostapenko two match points, and Ostapenko capitalized, securing the win with a well-executed forehand on her second serve.
This title is Ostapenko`s ninth WTA Tour title overall and her first on clay since her remarkable Roland Garros victory in 2017.
