Panthers Advance to Stanley Cup Final with Game 5 Win Over Hurricanes

NHL News

For the third straight year, the Florida Panthers are returning to the Stanley Cup Final. Their path back wasn`t easy, especially in Game 5 against the Carolina Hurricanes.

In the decisive Eastern Conference Final game on Wednesday night, Florida rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Carolina by a final score of 5-3. Playing at home, the Hurricanes started strong, with Sebastian Aho scoring twice in the first period to give them a two-goal lead at the first intermission.

However, the Panthers completely shifted the momentum in the second period. About seven and a half minutes in, Matthew Tkachuk provided the spark, tipping in a power-play goal to get Florida on the scoreboard.

Tkachuk`s goal initiated a rapid scoring surge for Florida, with three goals coming in just over four minutes. The Panthers took the lead when Anton Lundell outmaneuvered Aho to the net front and buried a perfect pass.

Carolina didn`t give up easily. In the third period, their intense forecheck paid off when Seth Jarvis executed a beautiful shot over Sergei Bobrovsky`s shoulder, leveling the game at 3-3.

That tying goal energized the Hurricanes and the arena, but the momentum was short-lived.

Less than four minutes later, Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov delivered the highlight play of the night. He muscled off Carolina defenseman Dmitry Orlov, skillfully deked around Eric Robinson, and set up Carter Verhaeghe for the game-winning goal at the backdoor.

Barkov also recorded an assist on Sam Bennett`s empty-net goal, contributing to a multi-point night for himself. Bennett, Sam Reinhart, and Matthew Tkachuk also had multiple points in the victory.

This achievement places the Panthers among an elite group; they are only the fourth team since 1980 to make it to the Stanley Cup Final in three consecutive seasons, joining the New York Islanders, Edmonton Oilers, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Following their tradition from last season`s Cup run, the Panthers players did not touch the Prince of Wales Trophy presented after winning the Eastern Conference Final. They are focused on the ultimate prize, which could involve a rematch with the Edmonton Oilers, who currently lead the Dallas Stars 3-1 in the Western Conference Final and could clinch their series soon.

Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes` playoff run ends once again in the Eastern Conference Final, marking their second elimination at this stage in the last three years. Their record in their last four conference final appearances now stands at 1-16.
