The Florida Panthers are heading back to the Stanley Cup Final for the third consecutive year, but they faced a challenge to secure their spot on Wednesday night. In Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to clinch the series with a 5-3 victory.
Playing on home ice, the Hurricanes started strong, with Sebastian Aho scoring two goals in the first period to give Carolina a two-goal lead at the first intermission.
However, the Panthers shifted gears in the second period. Just over seven minutes into the frame, Matthew Tkachuk provided a crucial spark by tipping in a power play goal. Tkachuk`s goal ignited a rapid scoring spree for Florida, as they netted three goals in a span of just over four minutes. Anton Lundell beat Aho to the net front to convert a pass and give the Panthers the lead.
Carolina showed resilience in the third period. A tenacious forecheck led to Seth Jarvis scoring a spectacular tying goal over the shoulder of Sergei Bobrovsky, briefly re-energizing the home crowd. But the tie was short-lived.
Less than four minutes later, Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov delivered a pivotal play. He out-muscled Carolina defenseman Dmitry Orlov, deked past Eric Robinson, and set up Carter Verhaeghe for the game-winning goal at the back post. Barkov also assisted on Sam Bennett`s empty-net goal, finishing a multi-point night. Bennett, Reinhart, and Tkachuk also recorded multiple points for Florida.
This accomplishment makes the Panthers just the fourth team since 1980 to reach the Stanley Cup Final in three consecutive seasons, joining the New York Islanders, Edmonton Oilers, and Tampa Bay Lightning. Keeping with tradition, the Panthers did not touch the Prince of Wales Trophy after the presentation, remaining focused on the ultimate prize. They now await the winner of the Western Conference Final, which could be a rematch with the Edmonton Oilers, who hold a 3-1 lead over the Dallas Stars.
For the Carolina Hurricanes, this elimination marks their second loss in the Eastern Conference Final in the last three years, and they now have a challenging 1-16 record in their last four appearances at this stage.
