Panthers Take 1-0 Series Lead with 5-2 Win Over Hurricanes in Game 1

NHL News

The Florida Panthers have taken a 1-0 lead in their Eastern Conference Final series against the Carolina Hurricanes. Following a decisive Game 7 victory in Toronto just two days prior, the Panthers delivered a strong performance, defeating the Hurricanes 5-2 in the opening game.

As anticipated, space was limited for both teams in this contest. However, the Panthers managed to find more openings, particularly around the net. This was evident when Carter Verhaeghe scored Florida`s first goal.

During a power play, Verhaeghe received the puck in the low slot, switched to his backhand, and sent a perfect shot over Frederik Andersen`s shoulder, giving the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.

Verhaeghe ended the night with two points, matching Evan Rodrigues, who assisted on Aaron Ekblad`s first-period goal. Fresh off a strong performance against the Maple Leafs, Ekblad scored by firing a shot that hit the post before going in past Andersen.

Throughout their playoff run, the Panthers have benefited from contributions across their entire lineup, and this trend continued on Tuesday night. A.J. Greer, Sam Bennett, and Eetu Luostarinen accounted for Florida`s other three goals.

Despite the offensive output, the Panthers didn`t require extensive offense to secure the win. Sergei Bobrovsky faced 33 shots from the Hurricanes and stopped 31, maintaining his excellent form.

Conversely, the Hurricanes struggled to generate sustained offense against the Panthers. Carolina`s offense had been effective in the first two rounds, but neither the Capitals nor the Devils posed the defensive challenge that Florida presents.

Sebastian Aho scored the first goal for the Hurricanes, though it occurred in a somewhat controversial manner. With less than a minute remaining in the first period, Aho redirected the puck into the net with the back of his skate. The goal was confirmed after a review concluded there was no distinct kicking motion.

That moment marked the peak of excitement at the Lenovo Center on Tuesday night, and Andersen experienced a particularly difficult game. While the Hurricanes` defense wasn`t poor, allowing only 20 shots on goal, five of those shots got past Andersen.

The Hurricanes have now lost 13 consecutive Eastern Conference Final games, a streak extending back to the 2009 playoffs. They will have a chance to break this streak in Game 2 on Thursday, but the Panthers will likely aim to prevent that.
