The New Orleans Pelicans are clearly trying to lose their remaining seven games this season. Currently holding the fourth-worst record in the NBA with 54 losses, they are just behind the Hornets for a top-three spot, which would maximize their chances (14%) of getting the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and the likely selection of Duke standout Cooper Flagg.
To help ensure more losses, the Pelicans have announced that Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum will not play for the rest of the season. The team officially cited a lower back issue for Williamson and a foot injury for McCollum, but this is widely seen as a clear strategy to improve their draft position.
Zion Williamson has again faced an injury-plagued season, playing only 30 games. While this is still low, it`s only his fourth-lowest game total in his six NBA seasons. He played 24 games as a rookie, missed the entire 2021-22 season, and played just 29 games two years prior.
Despite performing well in his 30 games, averaging nearly 25 points along with career highs in rebounds (7.2) and assists (5.3), the Pelicans` focus is now clearly on the future. Williamson`s talent is evident, but his availability remains a major concern. The key statistic for him is games played.
The Pelicans face a difficult decision with Williamson. His high level of play when healthy is undeniable, but his trade value is likely diminished due to his injury history. They must decide whether to trade him for less than his potential value or continue hoping he can stay healthy in the future.
The Pelicans were not expected to be in this position this season. After trading for Dejounte Murray, they entered the season with a strong roster. However, injuries have significantly impacted their season.
New Orleans` remaining schedule includes games against the Clippers, Lakers, Bucks (twice), Nets, Heat, and Thunder. Only the Brooklyn Nets are also expected to be trying to lose. The Pelicans should find it easy to lose most of these games.
However, the Charlotte Hornets also appear likely to lose their remaining games against teams like the Pacers, Kings, Bulls, Grizzlies, and Celtics (twice). Even if Charlotte wins unexpectedly against the Raptors, the Pelicans may not be able to secure a top-three lottery position.
The Pelicans are particularly focused on avoiding falling to the No. 5 lottery spot. Dropping to No. 5 would reduce their odds of getting the No. 1 pick from 12.5% (at No. 4) to 10%. The Philadelphia 76ers are close behind in the standings, and if they tie, the Pelicans would fall to No. 5 in lottery odds due to losing the season series to Philadelphia.
