Player Union Founded by Novak Djokovic Sues Tennis Governing Bodies

Sports News

The Professional Tennis Players` Association (PTPA), a union co-founded by Novak Djokovic, has initiated legal proceedings against the major organizations overseeing professional tennis. In response, the ATP has criticized the PTPA, accusing it of prioritizing “misinformation over progress.”

Established in 2021, the PTPA states its core mission is to advocate for and protect the interests of professional tennis players. The union has officially filed its lawsuit with the United States District Court in New York.

According to the lawsuit, the PTPA argues that professional tennis players are trapped within a “rigged system” that severely restricts their autonomy over their careers and personal brands.

The PTPA`s grievances include allegations of suppressed competition among tournaments, which they claim artificially lowers prize money, an unjust ranking system, an unsustainable match schedule, and the financial exploitation of players.

Furthermore, the lawsuit accuses the sport`s governing bodies of neglecting player welfare by mandating athletes to compete in late-night matches and under extreme heat conditions. The PTPA also condemns current anti-doping procedures as intrusive violations of privacy.

The legal action is being pursued by the PTPA along with 12 individual players, including PTPA co-founder Vasek Pospisil and Nick Kyrgios, representing the collective interests of all professional tennis players.

The defendants named in the lawsuit are the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Women`s Tennis Association (WTA), International Tennis Federation (ITF), and the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).

Both the ATP and WTA have issued statements refuting the allegations made by the PTPA.

Ahmad Nassar, the Executive Director of the PTPA, stated that “Tennis is fundamentally flawed. Beneath the glamorous facade promoted by the defendants, players are ensnared in an inequitable system that takes advantage of their talent, limits their earnings, and endangers their health and safety.”

Nassar added, “Having exhausted all avenues for constructive dialogue and reform, the governing bodies have forced us to resort to legal action to ensure accountability. Our aim is not to disrupt tennis, but to safeguard its future for upcoming generations of players and fans.”

Vasek Pospisil emphasized, “This is about more than just financial compensation; it`s about fairness, safety, and basic respect for human dignity.”

Pospisil recounted, “Even as a relatively successful player, I had instances early in my career where I had to sleep in my car when traveling to tournaments. It`s unthinkable to imagine a player in a major sport like the NFL being forced to sleep in their car for an away game. Yet, tennis treats its athletes in this manner.”

He continued, “The governing bodies impose unfair contracts, demand grueling schedules, and penalize players for speaking out. This legal action is aimed at rectifying these issues for current and future tennis professionals.”

Pospisil concluded, “It`s time for responsibility, meaningful change, and a system that truly supports and empowers players. All stakeholders deserve a sport that is governed with fairness and integrity.”

The International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed to news outlets that they have received the legal claim from the PTPA. The ITF also responded, stating their commitment to the growth and sustainability of tennis, reinvesting 90% of their revenue into global tennis development through their national associations.

ATP Statement: PTPA Prioritizes Misinformation Over Progress

The ATP released the following statement:

“While the ATP has been dedicated to implementing reforms that benefit players across all levels, the PTPA has consistently chosen division and distraction through misinformation rather than constructive progress. After five years since its inception in 2020, the PTPA has struggled to establish a significant role in tennis, making their decision to pursue legal action at this moment predictable.”

“We strongly disagree with the basis of the PTPA`s claims, believe the lawsuit is completely without merit, and will vigorously defend our position. The ATP remains committed to acting in the best interests of tennis – striving for continuous growth, financial stability, and a better future for our players, tournaments, and fans.”

“Since the ATP Tour`s establishment in 1990, we have been instrumental in the global expansion of men`s professional tennis. For over three decades, the ATP`s equal governance structure has ensured that both players and tournaments have equal input in shaping the sport at the highest level.”

“Recent years have seen transformative advancements for players. The introduction of a prize money formula, record levels of on-site prize money, and new and expanded Bonus Pools have significantly increased player compensation (by $70 million in the last five years). The implementation of annual, independent audits provides players with complete transparency into tournament finances at ATP events. The ATP`s Baseline program has established minimum guaranteed income for the Top 250 singles players, offering unprecedented financial security in professional tennis.”

“Contributions to the player pension fund have increased substantially, and prize money at ATP Challenger Tour events has more than doubled – reinforcing the ATP`s dedication to strengthening the player development pathway.”

“These improvements have been achieved through the ATP`s governance structure, where every critical decision is made with player input and through their elected representatives. Furthermore, players, as independent contractors, retain significant control over their schedules, allowing them the flexibility to compete, train, and manage their careers as they see fit.”

WTA Statement: PTPA Action is Misguided and Regrettable

The WTA echoed the ATP`s sentiments, stating: “The PTPA`s legal action is both regrettable and misguided, and we will vigorously defend our position in due course.”

“The WTA is fully dedicated to the ongoing development and evolution of professional women`s tennis, always carefully considering the perspectives of our players.”

“Fighting this unfounded legal case will divert valuable time, attention, and resources away from our primary mission, which is to the detriment of our players and the sport as a whole.”
