Stanley Cup Playoffs 2025: Second Round Action Sees Hurricanes and Oilers Claim Opening Wins

The NHL playoffs continued on Tuesday night with the start of two more second-round series. The Carolina Hurricanes secured a significant road victory over the Washington Capitals in overtime, while the Edmonton Oilers took Game 1 against the Vegas Golden Knights after staging a comeback.

In the early game, the Hurricanes dominated possession and peppered Washington`s goaltender Logan Thompson with shots throughout the contest. Although high-danger scoring chances were limited, Carolina held a clear territorial advantage. Despite their pressure, the Capitals initially led 1-0 heading into the third period, thanks to a goal from Aliaksei Protas.

Midway through the final period, Logan Stankoven finally broke through for Carolina, netting the equalizer. The game remained tied through regulation. In overtime, Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin fired a shot through traffic that found its way under Thompson`s pad to clinch the 2-1 victory.

Slavin`s game-winning play earned him recognition as one of the 3 Stars of the Night, highlighting top performances from across the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Out in Las Vegas, the Golden Knights quickly established a 2-0 lead in the first period with two goals from captain Mark Stone. Just as it seemed Vegas might pull away, Edmonton responded, powered by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who combined for four points on the team`s next two goals. Zach Hyman then scored the go-ahead goal with only a few minutes left in the game.

As the Golden Knights pressed for a tying goal, Connor Brown sealed the 4-2 win and a 1-0 series lead for the Oilers with a beautiful solo effort.

Playoff hockey continues on Wednesday night. The Florida Panthers will aim to even their series against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 2, while the Winnipeg Jets host the Dallas Stars as that Central Division matchup kicks off.
