Sunday`s game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Detroit Pistons turned intense when a fight broke out, extending into the spectator area near the court at Target Center. The incident resulted in the ejection of seven individuals: five players and two coaches.
The commotion began during what seemed like a standard play. Pistons rookie Ron Holland attempted to steal the ball from Timberwolves player Naz Reid as Reid was preparing for a layup in the second quarter, with 8 minutes and 36 seconds left on the clock. A foul was called, but Reid reacted strongly to Holland`s attempt, confronting him immediately and wagging a finger. Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo initially intervened, seemingly to de-escalate the situation, but was then pushed by Holland, which escalated the situation.
DiVincenzo rejoined the confrontation, and he and Holland became entangled in a shoving match. As teammates intervened to support both players, the momentum of the altercation carried them into the front row of seats, where a cameraman was knocked over.
After reviewing the situation, game officials ejected a total of seven people:
Timberwolves
- Naz Reid, Donte DiVincenzo, and assistant coach Pablo Prigioni
Pistons
- Ron Holland, Isaiah Stewart, Marcus Sasser, and head coach J.B. Bickerstaff
The NBA league office is expected to review video footage of the incident to determine if further disciplinary actions are necessary. It was noted that no players appeared to leave the bench area, which would automatically lead to suspensions and fines up to $50,000. It also appeared that no punches were thrown and no injuries occurred. However, the NBA typically takes situations where altercations spill into the stands seriously due to potential fan safety risks.
The high stakes of the game likely contributed to the tension, as both teams are aggressively competing for playoff positions. The Pistons are vying for the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference to secure home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Timberwolves entered Sunday`s game ranked seventh in the Western Conference and are working to climb above the play-in tournament line by achieving a sixth seed or higher in the remaining two weeks of the regular season.
