UFC 316 Official Weigh-in Results: Title Fights Set, One Fighter Misses Mark

MMA News

The official weigh-ins for UFC 316 saw one significant issue, but the main title fights are confirmed to proceed as planned.

Flyweight veteran Ariane da Silva unfortunately made headlines for the wrong reason, stepping onto the scale at 132 pounds. This is a significant miss, coming in six pounds over the 125-pound limit (which includes the one-pound non-title allowance) for her bout against Wang Cong. Wang Cong successfully made weight at 125 pounds.

Sources close to the situation confirmed that despite the weight discrepancy, the fight between da Silva and Wang Cong will still take place as a catchweight bout. As a consequence of missing weight, Ariane da Silva will forfeit 30 percent of her fight purse to her opponent.

Wang Cong reportedly commented on the situation through an Instagram video, expressing sympathy for da Silva.

In much more positive news, the top two championship fights scheduled for Saturday are official, with all four fighters successfully making their required weight.

In the men`s bantamweight championship rematch, champion Merab Dvalishvili weighed in slightly under the limit at 134 pounds, while challenger Sean O’Malley registered 135 pounds. Dvalishvili had previously defeated O`Malley at UFC 306 to capture the belt and is coming off a successful defense against Umar Nurmagomedov in January, extending his impressive win streak to 12 consecutive victories.

For the women`s bantamweight title, champion Julianna Peña also hit the 135-pound mark for the first defense of her second championship reign. The weigh-in for her opponent, Kayla Harrison, drew considerable attention. Harrison, a decorated two-time PFL tournament champion typically competing at 145 pounds, had never weighed less than 136 pounds in her previous 19 professional fights. She successfully made the 135-pound requirement on Friday morning, clearing the way for her highly anticipated UFC title debut.

Aside from Ariane da Silva`s significant weight miss, all other fighters scheduled to compete on the UFC 316 card successfully made their contracted weights without issue.

UFC 316 is set to take place this Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
