Van, with a record of 13 wins and 2 losses, and Silva, with 14 wins, 6 losses, and 2 draws (with 1 no contest), were initially scheduled to fight on March 8 in Las Vegas. However, Silva had to withdraw due to several injuries. Van went on to defeat Rei Tsuruya in his place, extending his winning streak to three fights, and his UFC record to 6 wins and 1 loss.
Silva is aiming to bounce back after a loss to Manel Kape in his last fight. Before that defeat, Silva had won four fights in a row, all by finishes, earning performance bonuses for each victory.
