UFC London results: Kevin Holland scores decision win over Gunnar Nelson

MMA News

Kevin Holland secured a decision victory over Gunnar Nelson at UFC London. While Holland prefers to fight frequently, a slower pace and focus on welterweight (170 lbs) might be better for his long-term success.

In this fight, marking his return to welterweight, Holland effectively neutralized Nelson`s offense and even scored a significant knockdown in the first round, nearly finishing the fight early. Nelson endured and attempted a submission in the late stages, but Holland was too skillful and remained dominant until the end.

All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Holland. This win snaps his two-fight losing streak in the middleweight division.

After the fight, Holland mentioned he wasn`t sure about the outcome, acknowledging Nelson`s toughness. He also expressed confidence in his grappling skills, particularly against opponents not significantly larger than him.

Holland stated that welterweight is a better fit for him, enhancing his athleticism. He indicated his readiness to fight again in July at welterweight or even next week at middleweight if needed.

During the fight, Holland aimed to maintain distance and strike, but Nelson managed to take the fight to the ground. Holland attempted submissions from bottom position, but Nelson defended effectively and controlled the situation. However, Holland escaped and dropped Nelson with a powerful punch. Holland followed up with strikes from top position, appearing to land a decisive blow just before the bell.

In subsequent rounds, Nelson tried to take the fight down, but Holland defended actively. Despite Nelson securing takedowns and attempting a choke, Holland defended successfully and even landed strikes from his back. On the feet, Holland dominated, forcing Nelson to defend until the fight`s end, ensuring his decision victory.

Despite mixed results at welterweight previously, Holland appears more competitive in this division. It remains uncertain whether he will stay at welterweight or return to middleweight for a busier fight schedule.
