Georgia`s passionate support for Merab Dvalishvili was on full display as the reigning UFC bantamweight champion returned to his homeland. Following his dominant third-round submission victory over Sean O’Malley at UFC 316 this past weekend, Dvalishvili arrived back in Georgia on Wednesday.
Upon his arrival at the airport, he was met by an overwhelming crowd of thousands of enthusiastic fans. Social media videos shared widely showed the champion immediately surrounded by jubilant supporters as he disembarked his plane, marking the beginning of his celebratory return.
The hero`s welcome continued as Dvalishvili transferred to a double-decker bus. Fans on motorcycles sped alongside the bus, eager to catch a glimpse of their beloved champion as he made his way through the city.
This incredible scene highlights Dvalishvili’s immense and growing popularity, largely fueled by the pride he clearly shows in representing Georgia whenever he competes.
Merab was accompanied by his head coach, John Wood, who shared insights into Dvalishvili`s genuine connection with his fans. Wood explained how the champion consistently prioritizes interacting with supporters, even if it means stopping whatever he`s doing to ensure everyone gets a moment.
“He really is that guy,” Wood affirmed. “Merab is the nicest, funniest, loving dude. He will sign every single autograph, talk to every single person; he genuinely loves it. He would participate in every event. He simply never says no.”
Wood recounted how this attitude often impacts their travel. “I’ve witnessed it so many times; it takes us hours to get places when we`re with him because he’ll spontaneously hop out of the vehicle and start signing autographs for people on a street corner. Then a crowd gathers, and he absolutely will not turn anyone away.”
This extraordinary level of reception was undeniably evident during his homecoming in Georgia. Dvalishvili will now continue to celebrate this latest triumph, which also marks his second consecutive successful title defense, following his victory over Umar Nurmagomedov in January.
