Zach Hyman Likely Out for Remainder of Stanley Cup Playoffs After Surgery

NHL News

Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman is anticipated to miss the remainder of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed Hyman underwent surgery for an upper-body injury sustained during Game 4 against the Dallas Stars.

The injury occurred in the first period of the Oilers` 4-1 victory. Hyman was attempting to avoid a hit from Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment near center ice. While he managed to get most of his body out of the way, Marchment`s contact clipped his arms, causing Hyman`s upper body to twist. He immediately dropped his stick and left the ice in discomfort, not returning to the game.

Since joining the Oilers in 2021, Hyman has been a key contributor to the team`s offense. He finished second on the team with 27 goals in the regular season and is tied for fourth on the team with five goals in the current playoffs.

Hyman`s absence puts further pressure on Edmonton`s forward depth, which is already considered top-heavy. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has stepped up his game recently, recording multi-point performances in four consecutive Western Conference Final matchups.

Beyond Nugent-Hopkins, other Oilers forwards, such as Evander Kane (who hasn`t scored since Game 4 of the previous round against Vegas), will need to increase their offensive production. While stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have performed exceptionally as expected, they will require more secondary scoring support without Hyman on their line.

It remains to be seen if the Dallas Stars can capitalize on Hyman`s injury as they face elimination. Despite possessing what is arguably the NHL`s deepest forward group, Dallas`s offense has largely struggled to produce in this series. Key players like Mikko Rantanen (who has yet to score), Wyatt Johnston (on a seven-game point drought), and veterans Matt Duchene and Jamie Benn (who have combined for just one goal all postseason) need to contribute more significantly if the Stars hope to extend the series in Game 5.
